Why Paver Patios Sink — and How to Prevent It

Most patio problems start below the pavers. Here's what a proper base looks like.

Pavers sink or shift when the base underneath wasn't excavated deep enough or compacted properly.

A proper base means digging out soil, adding crushed stone in layers, and compacting each layer.

Edge restraint keeps pavers from spreading. Polymeric sand in the joints locks them together and limits weeds.

Ask any contractor how deep they dig and how they compact. It's the part you'll never see — and the part that decides how long the patio lasts.
